Assistive Technology
What is Assistive Technology (AT)?
AT is any item, device, or piece of equipment that can be used to maintain or improve the function of an individual with a disability. For students and children with disabilities, AT can be a powerful tool that can help bridge their abilities to improve or even become fully independent in education and daily life.
Who can benefit from AT in the school setting?
Students who benefit from AT may have a motor, visual, and/or auditory processing deficit. AT is also used to support individuals with significant communication delays and cognitive deficits, including students with learning disabilities, such as Dyslexia.
How can AT help?
There is a wide range of AT possibilities ranging from low-tech (simplest form such as a pencil grip, slant board, or communication cards) to high-tech solutions (advanced technology options such as a tablet or laptop with supporting applications. The selection of AT equipment and applications are individualized to meet the needs of the student or individual. A student with motor limitations may require alternative methods to access his or her AT device. Furthermore, a student with visual deficits may require a large screen and customized settings with magnification options. A student with dyslexia may require an electronic text reader with specialized settings and a specialized program with word prediction and auditory feedback for writing.
AT Evaluations
Assistive Technology evaluations address each individual’s needs and personal goals while considering their limitations, which may negatively affect performances in reading, writing, math, activities of daily living, and/or communication. Evaluations strongly consider information provided by the school and family to best address individualized needs. It is our goal to accommodate the limitation and empower each child to be as independent as possible in their current and future environments.
We also provide AT training and consultative services.
